- Cardiovascular Health Information for Women– The Cleveland Clinic is a great resource for heart health information specifically for women. Their site contains tips to lower your risk for conditions like hypertension (high blood pressure), type 2 diabetes and obesity. Your heart is the most important muscle in your body, keep it healthy!
- Harvard School of Public Health– The Harvard School of Public Health is the best site when it comes to needing an explanation for any condition and have the most up to date nutritional information. They also have bilingual resources on many topics. They provide “how to” guides for nutritional challenges like lowering cholesterol and losing weight and fitness basics for safe and productive exercise.
- Institute of Medicine– The Institute of Medicine is a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing accurate and timely health information. They have the best bilingual resources out there on a variety of topics.
- American Diabetes Association– Unfortunately, as Latinas we are at a higher risk for Diabetes. The American Diabetes Association provides free educational programs and resources in Spanish. They are number one when it comes to preventing the onset of diabetes and controlling diabetes. They host events all over the country, so find something near you!
- Mental Health Association of New York City (MHA-NYC)– Featured in my Latina Teen Suicide Rates On The Rise-What you need to know article for Latina Magazine, the MHA-NYC has great resources for any type of emotional distress in English and Spanish.
- Disaster Distress Helpline– After a natural disaster, coping with the destruction can be difficult. Check out resources by calling or texting for more information 1-800-985-5990 (Phone), 1-800-846-8517 (TTY) or text: ‘TalkWithUs’ to 66746 (Spanish speakers can text ‘Hablanos’ to 66746).
- National Suicide Prevention Lifeline– If you or a loved one is experiencing thoughts of suicide or emotional distress, call 1-888-273-TALK (8255)
- Online fitness and health-related apps- The way we exercise and how we create better health habits are changing. Check out online fitness resources like FitnessGlo and Fitocracy or search the iTunes store and Google Play for apps to help track fitness and health progress.
- Sister to Sister– Learn about women’s heart health and find resources on the signs and symptoms of heart attacks in women, ways to de-stress and how to protect your heart with healthy habits on their website.
